Anna Maria City Pier is one of Tampa Bay’s most beloved fishing landmarks, extending into the calm waters of Anna Maria Sound at the northern tip of Anna Maria Island. Originally built in 1911, it was completely rebuilt after being destroyed by Hurricane Irma in 2017 and reopened in 2019 as a stunning modern structure that honors the original’s character.
The pier’s location in Anna Maria Sound means calmer water and a bay-side species mix unlike most Gulf piers. Snook are the star attraction — stacking under the lights at night in impressive numbers. A restaurant and cafe at the pier head lets you eat right where you fish. Dolphins are extremely common around the pier — expect regular visits throughout your trip.

Fishing at Anna Maria City Pier
Snook are the star attraction and can be caught year-round, with peak action in summer and fall when they stack up under the lights at night. Redfish are present year-round near the pier pilings and surrounding grass flats. Spotted Seatrout are common especially in cooler months. Sheepshead pile up around the pier structure in winter in impressive numbers.
For Snook at night, use live shrimp or small pinfish on a light leader and work the shadow line where light meets dark water. Sheepshead in winter need fiddler crabs or small shrimp fished directly on the pilings. Redfish respond to live shrimp or cut mullet near the bottom around the pier structure.
Local Tip
Stay for Dinner After You Fish
The restaurant and cafe at the pier head is genuinely good. Fish the evening bite, watch the dolphins at sunset, then grab dinner without leaving the pier. Anna Maria Island is one of the last true old-Florida beach towns — no chains, no high-rises, just pure coastal charm.
