Dr. Von D. Mizell–Eula Johnson State Park:
Dr. Von D. Mizell–Eula Johnson State Park sits on a barrier island just south of the Port Everglades inlet in Dania Beach — the last stretch of undeveloped Atlantic coast in Broward County. Its 900-foot fishing jetty at the north end, right at the inlet, is a magnet for anglers and for anyone who wants to watch cruise ships thread the channel.
This park carries real history. Formerly John U. Lloyd Beach State Park, it was once the county’s segregated “colored beach.” It was renamed in 2016 for Dr. Von D. Mizell and Eula Johnson, the civil-rights leaders whose 1960s “wade-in” protests helped desegregate Broward County’s beaches. Fishing the jetty here means standing on ground with a story.
You’ll pay a state park entrance fee at the gate and you’ll need your own Florida fishing license — this isn’t a commercial pier. The jetty stays busy, so expect company on a good day.
Beyond the fishing, the park protects Whiskey Creek (a manatee sanctuary), the Eurojacks artificial reef popular with scuba divers, and a barrier-island nature trail. The Whiskey Creek Hideout concession rents kayaks and paddlecraft.

Fishing at Dr. Von D. Mizell–Eula Johnson State Park
The north jetty fishes best on moving water as bait funnels through the Port Everglades inlet. It’s a classic South Florida inlet spot — anglers work live bait and jigs along the rocks. Watch your footing on the jetty, mind the boat traffic, and bring your Florida license.
