Gulf Islands National Seashore — Fort Pickens Fishing Pier sits on the western tip of Santa Rosa Island inside Gulf Islands National Seashore, one of the most stunning stretches of protected coastline in the United States. The fishing pier here gives anglers access to the clear emerald waters of the Gulf of Mexico in a setting of breathtaking natural beauty — white sand beaches, historic Fort Pickens, and the protected waters of the national seashore surrounding you on all sides.
The pier’s location within the national seashore means the surrounding waters are exceptionally healthy and productive. Cobia are a spring highlight and cruise near the surface in impressive numbers during their Gulf migration. Pompano and Whiting work the sandy bottom near shore. Spanish Mackerel arrive in spring and fall. King Mackerel are caught from the pier end in fall. Redfish and Flounder are year-round catches. The pier is open 24 hours and well-lit for productive night fishing.

Fishing at Gulf Islands National Seashore — Fort Pickens Fishing Pier
Cobia are the big draw in spring — walk the pier end and scan the surface for fish cruising near the surface during their Gulf migration. Drop a live pinfish or large jig in front of any fish spotted. Pompano work the sandy bottom near the shore end and respond to sand fleas or Fishbites. Spanish Mackerel hit fast-retrieved silver spoons near the surface. King Mackerel in fall at the pier end with live bait rigs.
The pier is fully lit for night fishing which is productive year-round for Flounder, Pompano, and Snook. Fish live shrimp under the lights for consistent night action. The national seashore setting means exceptional water clarity — on calm days you can see fish working the bottom from the pier.
Local Tip
Combine Fishing with Fort Pickens
Arrive at sunrise and fish the morning Pompano and Cobia bite, then spend the afternoon touring historic Fort Pickens just steps from the pier. The fort has guarded Pensacola Bay since the 1830s and is one of the most intact coastal fortifications in America. The combination of world-class Gulf fishing and a national historic landmark makes this one of the most unique fishing day trips in Florida.
