Eureka West Recreation Area is a Florida State Parks recreation area located along the western shoreline of the Ocklawaha River at the upper boundary of the massive Rodman Reservoir. This is a genuine freshwater fishing destination — the area sits where the natural river current meets the calm backwater bays of the reservoir, creating exceptional habitat for a wide variety of freshwater species. The setting is wild and beautiful — old-growth cypress trees line the river banks and wildlife including otters, eagles, and alligators are commonly seen.
The Ocklawaha River and Rodman Reservoir system is one of Florida’s most legendary bass fishing destinations. Largemouth Bass are the star species and can reach impressive sizes in the productive reservoir waters. Black Crappie are abundant and make for excellent table fare. Bluegill and Shellcracker are caught year-round near the pier and surrounding vegetation. Channel and Flathead Catfish are taken at night. The pier gives excellent access to the transition zone between the flowing river and the calmer reservoir — a productive habitat edge where fish concentrate.

Fishing at Eureka West Recreation Area
Largemouth Bass are the premier target and respond to a wide variety of lures — plastic worms and creature baits worked along the vegetation edges, topwater lures at dawn and dusk, and crankbaits worked through the transition zone between river and reservoir. Black Crappie are excellent around the submerged timber and structure in the reservoir backwaters — use small jigs or live minnows near any visible structure.
Bluegill and Shellcracker are caught near the pier on crickets, worms, or small jigs throughout the year with peak action in spring and early summer. Catfish are taken at night on cut bait near the bottom — channel cats in particular respond to chicken liver or cut shad. The pier sits in an excellent location to target fish moving between the river current and the calm reservoir backwaters on tide-like water level fluctuations.
Local Tip
Fish the River to Reservoir Transition
The most productive fishing at Eureka West is in the transition zone where the Ocklawaha River current meets the calm backwater bays of the Rodman Reservoir. Bass and Crappie concentrate at these edges especially during low light periods at dawn and dusk. Fish parallel to the vegetation lines with a slow-moving plastic worm or jig and work the current seams where moving and still water meet. This is classic Florida river bass fishing at its finest.
