The Okaloosa Island Pier is one of the most popular fishing spots along Florida’s Emerald Coast and is known for its easy access, beautiful Gulf views, and consistent fishing opportunities throughout the year. Located near Fort Walton Beach, the pier attracts both local anglers and visitors looking to experience Gulf Coast fishing without needing a boat.
Stretching into deeper Gulf waters, the pier gives fishermen access to a wide variety of species depending on the season. Common catches include Spanish mackerel, king mackerel, pompano, redfish, cobia, black drum, and whiting. During warmer months, larger predatory fish often move through the area, creating exciting opportunities for experienced anglers.
The pier is especially popular because it offers something for everyone. Families and beginners can enjoy fishing closer to shore, while more experienced fishermen often head toward the deeper sections at the end of the pier in search of larger fish. Early mornings and evenings are usually considered the most productive fishing times, especially during bait migrations and cooler temperatures.
In addition to fishing, the pier provides incredible views of the Gulf of Mexico and is a favorite location for dolphin sightings, photography, and relaxing walks along the water. Visitors often enjoy watching schools of fish moving beneath the pier while taking in the emerald-green water and white sand beaches nearby.
Amenities around the pier include parking, restrooms, nearby restaurants, bait and tackle access, and public beach areas. Its central location makes it one of the most convenient fishing destinations for travelers visiting the Destin and Fort Walton Beach area.
Live shrimp, cut bait, Gotcha plugs, and pompano rigs are commonly used depending on the targeted species and season. Local anglers often pay close attention to tides and water clarity when planning a successful fishing trip.
Whether you are visiting for serious fishing or simply enjoying the Gulf Coast scenery, the Okaloosa Island Pier offers one of the best pier fishing experiences on Florida’s Emerald Coast.

Fishing at Okaloosa Island Pier
Retrieve small silver spoons or jigs fast near the surface for Spanish Mackerel. Cobia in spring and fall — scan the surface near the pier end and drop a live pinfish in front of any fish spotted. Use Fishbites in pink or orange on a pompano rig near shore for Pompano. Night fishing with live shrimp under the lights consistently produces Flounder and Redfish.
Local Tip
Always Have a Cobia Rod Ready
In spring and fall walk the pier and scan the surface near the end for Cobia cruising by. Keep a heavy rod rigged with a live pinfish or large swim jig ready to cast at any moment. Cobia appear without warning and the window to get a bait in front of them is short.
